Britain Fails to Persuade China to Mediate Stopping Yemeni Operations in the Red Sea

Yemen: Last January, the United States turned to its adversary, China, to mediate stopping Yemeni operations in the Red Sea and the Bab el Mandeb Strait, reflecting a significant American failure and a clear lack of options in dealing with the Yemeni situation, especially as China rejected the American initiative, affirming that the problem lies in the ongoing aggression against Gaza.

Today, Britain received the same response from China after attempting to replicate the American experience, clearly revealing a dismal and unfamiliar failure for both the United States and Britain in rallying international positions. This failure, considered by the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Badreddin al-Houthi, as an important part of a broader failure resulting from a significant strategic shift made by Yemen through its military moves on the maritime front.

The British Foreign Office announced this week that Minister David Cameron met with the Chinese Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, with Cameron asking China to "utilize its influence" to halt Yemeni operations in the Red Sea, indicating a request for Chinese mediation to persuade Sana’a to stop those operations.

However, the Chinese Foreign Minister's response was that "the root cause of the problem in the Red Sea must be addressed, which is the ongoing fighting in Gaza." This is a clear confirmation from Beijing that the American and British attempts to separate the Yemeni maritime front from the battle in Gaza are utterly unsuccessful. This response also underscores China's - and many other countries with similar positions - acknowledgment that the threat in the Red Sea only concerns ships linked to the Zionist enemy, the United States, and Britain. Therefore, American and British efforts are fundamentally detached from the issue of maritime security and global trade.

The United States received a similar response from China when it attempted in January of last year to request mediation for the same goal. At the time, the American Financial Times confirmed that China did not show any gesture of assistance. Instead, the spokesman for its Foreign Ministry made statements affirming that the situation in the Red Sea is an extension of the situation in Gaza and that Yemen's sovereignty must be respected. This means that Beijing not only refused to mediate but also confirmed its rejection of the US-British aggression on Yemen.

The fact that the US and Britain resorted to China despite their well-known antagonism indicates a clear lack of options for both Americans and British in the face of the influential and active Yemeni position in the Red Sea. This is evidence of the futility of military aggression against Yemen, which both the US President and the British defense minister admitted had failed to deter Sana’a.

This was also affirmed by the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Badreddin al-Houthi, in his recent speech on Thursday, where he stated that this situation represents "an American failure in the strategy of involving others" and that this failure "is an important part of its failure in multiple directions" considering that what is happening is an unusual factor in the equation of influence, which Americans and British are used to always successfully rallying international positions in their favor. The Leader also praised "all countries in the world with a clear voice witnessing that Red Sea operations are connected to the situation in Gaza."

Britain's resort to Chinese mediation this month, despite the failure of the US in the same endeavor last month, indicates the inability of both countries to surpass the zero point in facing the Yemeni situation. Despite their continued aggression against Yemen, which they claim contributes to reducing Yemeni military capabilities, it has become clear through mediation efforts, ongoing maritime operations, and the confessions of American officers in the Red Sea that the US and Britain are completely unable to have any impact on the Yemeni position, whether operationally or decision-wise.
